According to Pike Research, the market research and consulting firm that provides in-depth analysis of global clean technology markets, the global market for thermal and biological waste-to-energy technologies is set to reach at least $6.2 billion in 2012 and grow to $29.2 billion by 2022.
They estimate that in 2011 the world generated over 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste, and that this figure will dramatically increase over the next 10 years. In an attempt to reduce landfill use, and solve our impending energy crisis, waste-to-energy processes will become more and more popular.
Pike Research predict that by 2022 waste-to-energy systems will convert more than 261 million tonnes of waste each year into an estimated 283 terawatt-hours of electricity.
Senior analyst at Pike Research, Mackinnon Lawrence, said that, "with many countries facing dramatic population growth, rapid urbanization, rising levels of affluence, and resource scarcity, waste-to-energy is re-establishing itself as an attractive technology option to promote low carbon growth in the crowded renewable energy landscape."
"China is already in the midst of scaling up capacity, and growth there is expected to shift the center of the WTE universe away from Europe to Asia Pacific."
