Daimler has released a press release to announce that its Mercedes SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive has set a world record by completing the Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack in Germany in under 8 minutes.
The SLS AMG electric car made one lap of the Nürburgring, one of the hardest race courses in the world, in just 7:56.234 minutes, the first time that an electric production vehicle has ever made the lap in less than 8 minutes, and quickly making it the most powerful electrically-powered series production vehicle in the world.
Tobias Moers, head of Overall Vehicle Development and a member of the Borad of Management at Mercedes-AMG GmbH, explained that using their experience gathered in Formula 1, they have developed efficient battery technology, "four electric motors positioned close to the wheels, the individual wheel torques 'AMG Torque Dynamics', the SLS eSound and our ambitious 'AMG Lightweight Performance' design strategy, the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive generates a breathtaking sensation unlike any other model out on the road."

One of the great benefits of the car is that the four compact electric motors are able to deliver maximum power and torque to the wheels instantly, meaning that the max torque is available from a standstill, unlike a normal combustion engine which only delivers the full torque at higher revs.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, stated that "Mercedes-AMG impressively shows the potential of the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with the new record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer which makes it possible to circle the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically-powered series production vehicle. This record run is another proof for our constant innovative vigour."
