John Kerry will succeed Hilary Clinton after he was officially confirmed as the new US Secretary of State.
This is a big boost to the environmental movement as Kerry is a well-known, long-time supporter of the environment and the battle against climate change.
He has previously stated that, "America's contributions to global climate change and our oil dependence are endangering our national security, our economy and our environment. But the global climate crisis is more than an urgent scientific imperative; it is also a tremendous economic opportunity to secure America's leadership in creating the low-carbon global economy and our future prosperity."
It is hoped that he will help to steer the US economy along a greener path, and enable them to lead the world into a brighter, more sustainable future.

David Foster, the Executive Director of the BlueGreen Alliance, an alliance of political parties that focus on Green Politics, wrote about Kerry's appointment to office that:
"In the Senate, John Kerry showed exemplary leadership on the issue of climate change, calling for much-needed action. As chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he traveled the world advocating this same message. There's no one better prepared to take on this challenge today.
Senator Kerry couldn't be more correct in saying climate change is 'life-threatening.' It is vital that the world achieves an international agreement to reduce carbon pollution. While we must pursue policies that will make the air and water cleaner in the U.S., warming surface temperatures and water levels are happening around the world, regardless of borders.
Our next secretary of state has a unique role in taking action on this issue and his expertise will help us to meet these challenges. We look forward to working with Senator Kerry as he continues to be a strong voice for action on climate change as secretary of state."
