New iPhone App Rewards Travelling by Bicycle or Foot

Without doubt, one of the most popular pieces of personal technology in the world today is the iPod or iPhone. Apps for apple products have become big business and can be downloaded millions of times. They offer a great way of reaching a large number of people and spreading a message of starting a trend. The Angry Birds game started off as a simple bit of physics based fun, and has now turned into a global franchise worth well over a billion dollars, all through its success as an Apple app.

Recyclebank is a company that produces apps, and its latest has been created with the aim of changing people's transport and lifestyle habits for the better. The app, called re:route, encourages people to travel by bicycle or by foot by offering rewards the more travel that you do.

"Whether your route is quicker, better for the environment or gets you burning more calories, you'll earn points towards all sorts of treats - from haircuts and hotels, to shopping and spa days."

The app has been designed to be as simple as possible. Once downloaded onto your iPod/iPhone you just need to enter your destination into the app, upon which it will suggest some options for walking or biking, and then you just go. For each mile covered you will earn points which can then be traded in for rewards.

The app is currently only available in the UK, but if it proves popular will be developed for global release. It has the potential, if it trends like other popular apps, to increase exercise, reduce obesity, and reduce carbon emissions, all by encouraging people to walk instead of take a car or bus.
