A team from Japan will shortly visit Andhra Pradesh's Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station in Ibrahimpatnam to study the possibility of augmenting the capacity of the plant's 210-megawatt thermal units. The study will initially cover the plant's oldest power unit, commissioned 31 years ago. The Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Plant is also known Vijayawada Thermal Power Plant and is owned and operated by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Ltd.
Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station Chief Engineer G. Kishore Babu said that he was optimistic that his engineering teams would be able to upgrade unit-1 by an additional 20 megawatts, Chennai's The Hindu newspaper reported.
The study is being undertaken as part of unit-1's Renewal and Maintenance (R&M) activity. If the upgrade is successful, then the Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station engineers intend to use similar measures to upgrade power output for all the station's coal-fired units more than 15 years old.
The Dr. Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station's six units currently have an installed generation capacity of 210 megawatts. A seventh unit was commissioned in January 2010 but has yet to come online.
