The main barrier to wide-spread use of electric vehicles, other than a low range, is the amount of time it takes to charge the battery.
A new EV charging technology from Australia now claims to be able to slash the recharge time of an EV to less than an hour, with 80% charge achievable in under 30 minutes.
With the help of a $1.5 million Early Stage Commercialisation grant from Commercialisation Australia, Tritium, the EV systems manufacturer from Queensland, was able to launch its Veefil charging system on Wednesday.
The company's website claims that the Veefil can charge an EV's battery 20 times faster than just plugging it into the wall at home, and that only ten minutes of charging is enough to off 50km of range.

The unit is compact enough to fit in most locations, including private garages, and supports both DC fast charging standards currently used by EV manufacturers.
Yvette D'Ath, the secretary for Climate Change, Industry, and Innovation believes that "reducing the charge time of an electric vehicle from eight hours to less than an hour is a game changer and will be a major boost for the electric car industry.
With all indications that demand for electric cars will grow significantly over the next decade, this places Tritium - a Brisbane-based manufacturer - in a prime position to capitalise on that growth"
