McLaren, the iconic UK motor sports team, and first ever carbon neutral F1 team, will use its nearly 50 years of experience in F1 to develop data centres that are more energy efficient.
Data centres around the world currently use about two percent of the world's energy supply, equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants, and this demand is only expected to increase as economies shift to use smarter technology.
The Applied Technology department of the McLaren team announced on Friday that it is entering into a long-term partnership with the IO technology company, to use its expertise in energy efficiency to improve the design and operation of future data centres.

Jim Newton, the director of performance management at McLaren Applied Technologies, spoke to BusinessGreen, and told them that the aerodynamic Techniques used in F1 can also be used to improve cooling within data centres. Modelling and data management techniques will also be used to provide more accurate predictions of energy usage, in order to reduce over-capacity, and generally improve efficiency.
Newton explained that the partnership is for the long-term and that there is the potential that it may spread into other areas in the future.
